If you’re planning family trips around a school calendar, you already know the problem: every family in your district has the exact same weeks off, and the good places book first. This page lays out every 2026–27 break, what a Harbor Springs trip looks like on each one, and — the part most guides skip — when you actually need to book.

Winter Break: December 21, 2026 – January 1, 2027
This one’s nearly universal — Christmas and New Year’s both land on Fridays, so virtually every district in Michigan and the Chicago area is off the same two weeks, with kids back Monday, January 4.
Two full weeks means you don’t have to fight for the exact holiday dates. Most families do one of two things: Christmas week for the full snow-globe version, or the quieter week between Christmas and New Year’s, when the slopes are open, the town is lit up, and the pressure’s off. Nub’s Nob and The Highlands are both running, and the house is 7–8 minutes from either — kids can ski the morning and be back on the couch by lunch.
When to book: this is the most competitive window of winter. If you want Christmas week, book by mid-October. The in-between week holds a little longer, but not much. MLK Weekend: January 16–18, 2027
Three days, deep January snow, and less competition than the February breaks. This is the sleeper pick for ski families — conditions are usually at their most reliable and the crowds haven’t peaked. If you only get one winter weekend, our ski season guide makes the case for this one.
When to book: by early December.
Mid-Winter Break & Presidents Day: mid-February 2027
Here’s where district calendars split. Many Michigan districts take a mid-winter break around Presidents Day (February 15) — some just the long weekend, some a full week off, commonly the February 12–16 window. Check your district’s published calendar, because this is the break parents most often get wrong by a day or two.
Whatever your district gives you, this is peak ski-family season in Harbor Springs. It’s also the busiest stretch on the mountain — which is exactly why staying 7 minutes away beats commuting from Petoskey: first chair is winnable, and mid-day breaks at the house are actually possible with young kids.
When to book: Presidents week is the second-fastest winter window after Christmas. Book by New Year’s, earlier if your district takes the full week.
Spring Break: Late March – Early April 2027
Two waves here. Most Michigan districts break March 26 – April 2 (bridging Good Friday and Easter weekend). Chicago-area families mostly go the week before, March 22–26. If your crew spans both — a two-family trip, cousins in different states — that overlap weekend of March 26–28 is your window.

When to book: by mid-February. Spring rates are the value play of the year.
Summer Break: Mid-June – Labor Day 2027
Michigan schools start after Labor Day, so summer runs long here — kids are out roughly mid-June through September 6. July is the peak and books furthest ahead of anything on this page. If you’re targeting a specific July week, especially around the 4th, treat six months out as normal, not early.

Thanksgiving: November 25–27, 2026
Most kids are off Wednesday through Friday, which makes a five-day trip out of a three-day break. Harbor Springs at Thanksgiving is the quiet version of Up North — and some years, Nub’s Nob is already spinning lifts. Our Thanksgiving guide has the rundown. When to book: by late October — this window is smaller than people assume.
