Every “best ski resorts in Northern Michigan” list buries the lede, so here it is up front: the two best family ski hills in the Lower Peninsula sit across the road from each other in Harbor Springs. Everything else is a longer drive for a different flavor of the same snow. Here’s the honest ranking, with real drive times from our place.
Drive times from The Bird House
Two great hills — Nub’s Nob and The Highlands — are both under 10 minutes from the house, so you can ski both in one weekend.
1. Nub’s Nob — the Local Favorite
Ask anyone who skis up here regularly and you’ll hear the same thing: Nub’s grooming and snowmaking are the best in the state, the vibe is unpretentious, and the learn-to-ski program is built for families. Varied terrain across three faces, reasonable prices, and a cafeteria that doesn’t feel like an airport. It’s ~7 minutes from The Bird House — close enough to come home for lunch.
2. The Highlands — the Full Resort Experience
Right across the road (~8 minutes from the house), The Highlands brings the big-resort package: one of the largest verticals in the Lower Peninsula, slopeside dining, rentals, and a polished village feel. It skis bigger than Nub’s and costs accordingly. The smart play for a Harbor Springs week: ski both — Nub’s for the snow, The Highlands for the scene.
3. Boyne Mountain — Best Add-On Day (~35 min)
Down in Boyne Falls, Boyne Mountain pairs solid terrain with the things kids talk about afterward: Avalanche Bay (Michigan’s biggest indoor waterpark) and the SkyBridge. As a day trip from Harbor Springs it’s an easy win — ski the morning, waterpark the afternoon.
4. Treetops Resort — the Gaylord Option (~45 min)
Smaller hill, friendly prices, and a good fit if you’re combining skiing with snowmobiling or cross-country — Gaylord sits in Michigan’s snowbelt and gets buried most winters.
5. Shanty Creek — Bellaire’s Twin Hills (~1 hr)
Schuss Mountain offers respectable terrain and the village is pleasant, but from Harbor Springs you’re driving past two better hills to get there. Best if your group is split between Traverse City and Petoskey.
6. Crystal Mountain — Great Resort, Wrong Direction (~1 hr 45)
Crystal is a terrific family resort — for people staying near Traverse City or coming up from the south. From Harbor Springs it’s a trek that buys you nothing Nub’s and The Highlands don’t already deliver.
How Families Actually Pick
First-timers and mixed abilities: Nub’s Nob — forgiving terrain and the best lesson value. Want the resort feel: The Highlands. Kids begging for a waterpark: Boyne Mountain day trip. The real answer for most groups: stay in Harbor Springs and ski Nub’s AND The Highlands in one weekend — no other base in Michigan puts two hills this good within 8 minutes.
